New Year's Eve Viterbo
The New Year’s Eve in the Viterbo square is very funny, because every year are organized concerts and shows worthy of a great city.
Viterbo is located in the upper Lazio, or Tuscia, and must precisely thanks to its strategic position on the centre of various means of communication, it has a key role in the economy of the central Italy.
Moreover, thanks to its monuments and its historical and artistic beauties, some dating back to its foundation during the Etruscan period, today Viterbo bases much of its economy on the tourism industry.
Let’s start our visit of the city from the San Lorenzo cathedral, a building in Romanesque style dating back to the XIInd century: the Duomo (cathedral) is situated in the beautiful San Lorenzo square, centre of the medieval town, which houses two other important historical buildings, namely the Loggia and the Popes' Palace.
The Popes' Palace, in Gothic style, is from the XIIIth century, while the Loggia of the Popes was added in the XVth century: with its arcades supported by small columns, the Loggia is one of the most evocative monuments of the city.
Other historical buildings, of which the centre is full of, are the Municipal Palace, wanted by the Sisto IV Della Rovere Pope in the XVth century, the Podestà Palace, dating back to 1200; impressive is also the Farnese Palace, even this built in the XVth century.
Among the religious buildings, it is mandatory a visit to the Santa Rosa Sanctuary which preserves the relic of the Holy’s body.
This sanctuary, rebuilt in 1800, is the last stage of the traditional Santa Rosa procession: each year, on 3rd September, about 90 porters parade through the streets of the city, bringing on their shoulder the Santa Rosa machine, a huge fake bell tower that, however, is high more than 30 metres.
Finally we visit the museums: one of the most important of Viterbo is the Civic Museum, with works and objects that belong to the origins of the city until the Modern age.
This museum is housed within the former Santa Maria of the Truth convent.
Still, we can visit the National Etruscan Museum, situated within the fortress.
Also the fortress is inherently interesting: this is a set of buildings that were built from the XIVth century.
