New Year's Eve Udine

Thanks to its good position, Udine is considered one of the main city of the Friuli region both for the cultural and the commercial: there are interesting events that take place in the Christmas and New Year period.
Despite the fact that the city is in a cultural and urbanistic boom that in the years in which it was annexed by the Venetian Republic (1420), Udine saw a large expansion from the end of the World War.
In addition to the commercial activities and crafts, Udine presents a flourishing industry: among the most developed industries there the are the service, textiles, breweries and distilleries ones.
As usual, we begin our visit from the Cathedral, whose original structure dates back to the 14th century: the Cathedral of Udine is particularly famous because it is decorated with frescoes of the famous painter Giovanbatti Tiepolo.
Other building decorated by Tiepolo is the Palazzo Vescovile (Bishop's Palace): originally built for the Bishop of Udine, today houses the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art.
Other historical marvels to admire in the medieval centre of Udine are, for example, the castle in Renaissance style, inside which one can visit numerous museums, such as the Civic Museums, the art gallery, the imposing library and the Archaeological Museum.
Still, it is imperative a visit to one of the most beautiful squares of Italy, namely Piazza della Libertà (freedom square).
Here you find the famous San Giovanni loggia, a monumental building with a tower, dating back to the XVIth century.
Among the churches, we cannot not appoint the San Giovanni church, which is located in the same loggia: inside it, we can admire the numerous paintings and frescoes of important artists from Friuli.
Other Church to visit is the Santamaria di Castello church.
Finally, you can’t miss a gastronomic visit of the city: among the restaurants we recommend the Antico Foledor Conte Lovaria, situated in one of the most beautiful villas of the zone, in Pavia in Udine.
Here you can taste truly special dishes, because the chef of the restaurant loves approaching innovative flavours in the recipes of the Friuli tradition.
