New Year's Eve Terni

The Terni town, usually very quiet, becomes particularly lively during the New Year period, thanks to the many initiatives promoted, such as markets and concerts.
The city, although its history is very old (in fact it was founded by the Umbrians), has a very modern aspect, because it was largely destroyed during the World War II.
Furthermore, the city modern aspect is also due to the many industries: in fact, after it passed through various dominations, from 1875 the city has lived a great industrial development, which began with the first weapon factories and the first steel plants.
However, today it is one of most active industrial centres in the centre of Italy.

Let’s start our visit of the city from the Duomo, reconstructed in the XVIIth century, which is in part in the Romanesque style and in part in the Gothic one.
Just opposite to the cathedral we can admire the Bianchini Riccardi Palace, dating back to the XVIth century, while, in the immediate vicinity, we find the Roman amphitheatre ruins, 32 B.C., in addition to the St. Lorenzo baslica, dating back to 1200 but enlarged in 1600.
Other religious buildings to visit are the St. Pietro in Trivio church, 1300, as even its cloister; the St. Francesco church, in Gothic style, 1265, famous for its magnificent bell tower and for the Paradisi Chapel, with frescoes of Dantesque inspiration.
To visit, then, all the city centre, enclosed by the Repubblica square, the Solforino square and the Europa square.
In the first square we can admire the magnificent Podestà Palace, the former municipal headquarter in Neo-Renaissance style built in 1878.
Still, the Carrara Palace, within which it is hosted the City Library; the Spada Palace, XVIth century.
For a visit to the museums, we recommend the Civic Museums, within the Fabrizi building, and the Municipal Art Gallery.
Finally, it worths a visit even St. Salvatore, a building dating back to the early Christian period and therefore the oldest monument in Terni.
