New Year's Eve Siena

The city of Siena is wonderful throughout the year, but in the Christmas and New Year period is particularly charming.
The city was founded as a Roman colony by the Augustus Emperor and, in addition to the Roman dominion, also knew as the Longobardo and the Franc.
However, the most prosperous period, at least for what concerns the expansion of the city, was surely the Middle Age.
A great economic power since the old times, thanks also to the ancient Monte dei Paschi di Siena, today Siena can count on a developed tourist industry.
We start our visit of the city from the Duomo square, where you can admire the beautiful cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta.
The construction of the cathedral started in the XIIth century, but only in 1339 it started the construction of a new cathedral, which was supposed to be so great and majestic to compete with Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence.
Other typical place in Siena is the magnificent Campo square, that once upon a time was nothing but a field, a meeting point of three hills.
To further embellish this amazing square, there are various noble palaces and the famous Fonte Gaia, and yet the Public Palace with the huge Torre del Mangia: the Pubblic Palace, dating back to 1200, it is an exceptional example of the Gothic architecture, and it was is both the Podestà and the Municipal headquarter.
Another building that is worth visiting is the Renaissance Piccolomini Palace and that one of the Papesse.
Among the many museums hosted in the city of Siena we recommend: the Metropolitana del Duomo Opera Museum, the National Gallery, and the Civic Museum.
Finally, to remember is that around Siena are organized some of the most famous and characteristic events in the world, such as the Palio race, which is held on 2nd July and August 16th in the Campo square.
