New Year's Eve Salerno
For a romantic New Year's Eve on the beautiful Amalfi coast, we can choose the town of Salerno, in the immediate vicinity of one of the most important archaeological Italian sites, namely the Paestum.
Founded by the Etruscans, Salerno knows different dominations, among which the Romans one, the Byzantines and Longobards, to end under the Normans domain. Without a doubt the most florid and prosperous period of Salerno was that one under the Longobard domination.
Even if the tourism industry development has just began, from always the city of Salerno has based its economy on the port activity: the port of Salerno is one of the most important of all the Mediterranean.
We start our visit of the city from the cathedral, dedicated to the Matteo Apostle: this property is still kept in its original Romanesque style, despite various restructurings made along the centuries.
Inside it, we can visit the Pope Gregory VII tomb, the Ruggero Borsa (Roberto’s the Guiscardo son, who he built the Duomo) tomb, Margherita of Durazzo tomb in addition to the Saint Matthew’s crypt, patron of the city.
Another religious building to visit is the Crucified church, built during the Xth and XIth century.
Finally, we can visit the Agro Picentino National Museum, within which are kept many witnesses from the Iron age.
