New Year's Eve Reggio Calabria
Thanks to its typical Mediterranean climate, Reggio calabria is a city that you can visit any time of the year, also, why not, in the coldest period, namely the Christmas and New Year period.
The city was a Greek colony, but it is difficult to rebuild the whole history, as Reggio Calabria was destroyed by earthquakes many times.
In addition to the various artistic beauties that the city can offer, particularly beautiful is the landscape that you can admire from the coast: walking on the Matteotti seafront, you will have a splendid view on the Messina Strait, on the Peloritani and Etna mountains.
But we start our visit of the city from the Duomo, rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake in Romanesque style.
To certainly visit is the beautiful Municipal Villa: here you can admire a surprising botanic garden, which has several specimen of the wild tropical and Guinea flora.
It also worths a visit the castle, of the Aragonese period: unfortunately, little remains of this fantastic building, of which were preserved only the two towers and a piece of curtain.
Finally, we visit the National Museum: here we can have a full picture of the history of Calabria, thanks to the finds which cover the period of time from the Prehistoric period to the Greek colonization, to the Roman, Byzantine and Medieval period.
It is precisely in this museum that are preserved the famous Riace bronzes, dating back to the Vth century: found on the bottom of the Ionian Sea, these statues are a beautiful example of the Hellenistic art.
