New Year's Eve Ravenna
The town of Ravenna is in the immediate vicinity of a fun park called Mirabilandia: What a better New Year solution than spend the terrifying roller coaster of the Park?
Certainly, it does, but the most crowded season of the year is the summer, when the tourists go to the beaches of the city (i.e. the Lidi di Classe, di Savio, di Dante).
But Ravenna has still more to offer: indeed, is an old city (it was the capital of the West Roman Empire) and in every corner you can breathe history and art.
Ravenna has always been, since its foundation, a very florid and rich city, thanks also to its strategic position: to witness the fortunate fate of the city, there are the many noble palaces, the mausoleums, the wonderful basilicas that characterize the historical centre.
Still today Ravenna is a prosperous town, very lively and active from the cultural point of view: its economy is mainly based on the tourism industry.
Starting our visit of the city, we come to realize how Ravenna is really unique in its genre: famous all over the world, especially for the marvellous mosaics of the Byzantine epoch that decorate several buildings of the city, Ravenna seems suspended in time.
There are a lot of monumento to visit (some of them are in the list of World Heritage of Humanity) as for example: the Galla Placidia Mausoleum, dating back to the Vth century, it is particularly famous for its mosaic cycle, the most ancient of the city. Yet we can visit the Theodoric Mausoleum: this building is famous thanks to its particular dome, constituted by a single block of Istrian stone.
Among the religious buildings we cannot not to visit the St. Apollinare Nuovo basilica, dating back to the VIth century: commissioned by the Emperor Theodoric, the Basilica is very particular thanks to its bell tower like a cylinder, in addition to the lush mosaic decoration, it is the greatest that is known.
Then, we recall the San Vitale basilica, 6th century, famous for the mosaics that depict Emperor Justinian and the EmpressTheodora.
Finally, let’s spend a little time for the Neoniano Baptistery, among the oldest buildings of the city: it's worth visiting the Baptistery for the wonderful mosaic that decorates the dome, strongly wanted by the Neone Bishop.
If you are still hunting for historical treasures you can then visit the St. Apollinare in Classe basilica, the Arcivescovile chapel and Dante’s tomb.
Still in Ravenna there are many Museums of great importance such as, for example, the National Museum of Art of the Ravenna city and the Arcivescovile Museum.
