New Year's Eve Olbia
Olbia is one of the most sought-after summer destinations, but also in winter, above all for Christmas and New Year, the city has a unique charm and beauty.
And it is not difficult to understand what has caused so much beauty: in the first place its position, namely in the immediate vicinity of the Emerald Coast, just opposite the beautiful Tavolata Island.
The origins of the city are certainly old and probably are attributed to the Carthaginians, although the city has become truly worthy of this name only in Roman times.
After the Romans followed a series of vandale populations, which destroyed the city completely.
Only with the dominion of Pisa, precisely in the XIth century, the city, now called Terranova, rose again: in this period were built some of the most beautiful buildings of the historical centre.
Again the crisis came, this time under the Spanish domain; it was only from the XXth century that Olbia began to rise from its ashes, especially thanks to the development the tourist industry.
Today Olbia bases most of its economy on the tourism industry: during the summer is very populated, as one of the most important Italian tourist centres, and not only for its wonderful sea.
In fact, the area around Olbia is full of old “nuraghi” and giants tombs, fascinating monuments which attract many visitors.
Furthermore, Olbia is one of the most important points of communication between Sardinia and Italy, both for the port and for the airport.
We start the visit of the city from two religious buildings very important: the first is the St. Simplicius church, patron of the city.
This magnificent construction is distinctly in Roman style contaminated by Tuscan and Lombard elements: in fact it was built in the period from XIth century to the XIIth century.
The second is the St. Paul church, built in part in granite.
Also worth a visit the Umbertino Palace, XIXth century: inside, we can visit the museum, with Nuragic era finds and the Municipal Library.
Finally, we cannot not to go to the Olbia Marittima Port, built in 1930: the particularity of the port is that it is connected to the mainland by a dan, on which pass also the train.
