New Year's Eve Matera

Matera has a really typical aspect, especially in winter, when the hills near the Murgia will slightly whiten, and sometimes they are covered by a slight fog veil: why not plan a nostalgic New Year’s Eve right here?!
Think of the surprising Matera history, which sees its origins during the Palaeolithic era: after passing through various domains, in the XXth century Matera was abandoned.
Only in 1952 the Italian State started to build new houses for the inhabitants of the region, which until then used to live in the caves, in carved caves out of the rock, where they were totally absent of toilets and water.
Today Matera is seeing a great development in the tourism field, a great source of sustenance: a reason for so much interest by the visitors is represented also by the fact that Matera recently was the set of an important film, such as "The Passion" by Mel Gibson’s.
As already said, Matera is very famous in the world mainly for its Sassi (rocks), namely the caves dug in the rock, which acted as houses for the inhabitants of the place until a very short time ago.
Therefore, the most interesting part of our visit of the city will be the old centre, which is divided into two parts, the Sasso Cavoso and the Sasso Barisano, on the two opposite sides of the rGravina river.
Walking in the midst of the Sassi it seems to go back in time, especially through the small streets derived among a stone and the other.
To visit in Matera there are also some museums, such as the National Museum of the Medieval and Modern Art.
