New Year's Eve Livorno
For those who do not want to renounce at the sea breeze even for the New Year, the city of Livorno could be an unusual and surprising solution!
Especially famous for its port and for its naval military academy, founded in 1881, Livorno is also a thriving industrial city.
As usual, we start our visit from the Duomo (cathedral), situated in the beautiful Piazza Grande square: the square is the true heart of the city, full of historical treasures and also bars and cafès.
Rebuilt after the World War II, because of the bombing that had almost completely destroyed the city, Piazza Grande still hosts buildings of great historical interest, such as the Palazzo Grande and the Municipal Palace.
Two other important buildings, to absolutely visit, are the New Fortress and the Old Fortress.
Also interesting is the Mascagni terrace, a surprising construction formed by 4100 marble columns on a charming mosaic floor.
However, one of the Livorno symbols is the Monument to the Four Deaths: it is the statue of Ferdinando I de’ Medici, surrounded by pirates statues in chains; the work is by the artist Giovanni Bandini and Pietro Tacca and dates back to 1595.
Finally, you can visit the many museums hosted by the city of Livorno.
Among the most important visit the Provincial Museum, the Ma scagno Museum and the Jewish Museum Yeshivè.
