New Year's Eve Lecce
The experience of a New Year’s Eve in the Salentina area is absolutely not to miss! The beautiful position of Lecce, between the wonderful Adriatic coast and that one of the Ionian sea, ensures a typical Mediterranean climate.
Its beauty and great artistic value are also due to the various dominations that the city has seen since its origins: the Romans, the Normans, the Byzantines, the Aragoneses, passing from the Renaissance to the Baroque period, many are the historical monuments that can be admired in Lecce.
However, the greatest splendour period, is without a doubt that one of the Spanish domination.
In addition to the tourism, the city of Lecce can base its economy on a flourishing industry, especially the agricultural one.
The Lecce historic centre deserves to be visited all, and in fact it is considered one of the most beautiful Italian South suburbs, particularly thanks to its distinctly Baroque style: what makes all really amazing is the visual effect caused by the characteristic Pietra Leccese, a particular golden stone with which it was built all the old city.
Let’s start our visit from the Duomo (Cathedral): the most characteristic part of this wonderful building is the bell tower and the St. Oronzo statue, framed in a precious Triumphal Arch, all in the marvellous Duomo square.
However, the main square of the city is the St. Oronzo square, in the centre of which it stands proud the St. Oronzo obelisk.
Always in the same square, there is the beautiful Roman Amphitheatre, dating to the IInd century and still perfectly preserved, and the St. Croce church, one of most important examples in the world of the Baroque art.
In the immediate vicinity of the square we cannot not visit the wonderful Municipal Villa, with its marvellous gardens.
Among the city churches, those to absolutely visit are the St. Matteo church, an architecture icon of the 1600, and the church dedicated to the Saints Nicolò and Cataldo: this splendid building dating back to the XIIth century is characterised by a beautiful facade in Romanesque style, on which we can admire a stunning door and an old rose window.
Still, we can admire the former Celestini convent, dating back to 1600 and today known as the Government Palace: the most beautiful part of this building is the courtyard, in the XVIIIth century style.
