New Year's Eve Grosseto
Grosseto could be a perfect place to spend a quiet New Year, maybe in one of several agrotourism immersed in the Tuscan countryside.
This city has based its economy on the farming industry and the tertiary sector, even if a large part of its fortune comes from the tourism: in particular, the visitors are attracted by the beauty of the historical centre, rich of monuments and art works.
The ancient city walls, dating back to the XVIth century and still perfectly preserved, dates back to the times of the domain of the Medici family (precisely Ferdinando I de' Medici), who, in addition to reclaim the territory of Grosseto, contributed to the economic growth of the area.
The medieval walls, which enshrine the whole historic city centre, have an hexagonal form and they have 6 impressive corner bastions.
However, it was mostly thanks to the land reclamation commissioned by Leopoldo II (1828) that the Maremma became a fertile and prosperous area.
We start to visit Grosseto from the Cathedral, built between the 1294 and1302 and then restored many times.
We continue our visit from the Cathedral, dedicated to the patron of the city, that is, the St. Lorenzo cathedral, situated in the beautiful Dante square.
The Cathedral, rebuilt in 1190, was subjected to many restructuring, and the most significant are those made in 1500.
Inside we can admire two windows of 1400, created by Benvenuto di Giovanni, in addition to Antonio Ghini and of Matteo di Giovanni art works.
Two other very important churches are the St. Peter’s Church, the oldest in Grosseto, with its bell tower made of stones and bricks dating back to 1625; and the St. Francis of Assisi Church, which firstly belonged to the Benedictine and then to the Franciscans.
In Grosseto are also present important historical buildings such as the Province Palace, in neo-Gothic style.
Still, in Fratelli Rosselli square we find the Government palace and the Posta palace.
Very interesting are also the Cassero Senese and the Cassero del Sole, both of mediaeval origin.
The first one is situated within the so-called Bastion Fortress, while the second, that in 1300 was a kind of salt customs, adjusting its production, distribution and export, is situated in front of the Porta vecchia(Old Door).
The latter one, that once upon a time was the only access to the walls, it is a stone arch, in gothic style, on which it is grafted another arch, dating back to the 14th century.
To see also is the Industri Theatre, of 1863, once upon a time a building for the pilgrims and it became a cinema after World War; and yet the monument to Leopoldo II of Lorena, last Grand Duke of Grosseto: a Luigi Magi art work inaugurated in 1846, the sculpture represents the Grand Duke while taking in his arms the Maremma, i.e. a woman suffering that is embracing her dying son.
Finally, we suggest a visit to the Archaeological Art Museum, which is located in the beautiful Baccarini square: inside, we can admire many prehistoric finds of the province, paintings of the Sienese school, all dating back to the period from XIIrd to XVIIth century, in addition to coins, wooden statues and numerous ceramics.
