New Year's Eve Enna

Enna, situated in the heart of Sicily, is the ideal destination for those who want to spend a quiet and isolated New Year's Eve.
It is the less populated province in Sicily, it is not wet from the sea and its climate is typically mountain, since it is about 1000 meters of height from the sea level.
Because of its position it gained the definition of Sicily navel, which has made it, along the course of centuries, very attractive from the strategic point of view.
From the Greeks in the VIIth century B.C., a period in which was the Cerere cult was born, that’s the wheat Goddess, Enna has seen the various dominations from many civilizations: first the Syracusans of Dionysius “the Old”, then the Carthaginians.
During the Punic Wars was then conquered by the Romans, becoming an important trade centre.
There were then the Arabs and, in 1087, the Normans of Federico II: he succeeded in developing the political and cultural importance of this centre.
Today Enna economy is based mainly on the farming industry and the trade, mainly about crafts and local products.
Also recently Enna was revalued also as a tourist destination.
We start our visit of the city from the Duomo (cathedral), dating back to the Federico Argon period, but later rebuilt after a fire between the XVIth and the XVIIth century: the original Gothic style is still slightly visible on the imposing building, now in Baroque style.
Very characteristic is the bell tower, which overlooks a porch formed by Doric, Ionic and Corinthian colums.
The Duomo is situated in the immediate vicinity of the Lombardia castle, that once was the main defence stronghold of the city, together with the Federico tower: in fact, both desired by Frederick II of Swabia, occupy the highest part of the city.
Of the 20 towers that surrounded the castle, today only 6 are preserved, among which the highest is the Pisana tower.
Very particular are the three courtyards that occupy the internal part of the castle, namely the St. Nicola courtyard, a sort of outdoor theatre, the Maddalena courtyard, and the St. Martino courtyard, where there were the royal apartments.
In the area opposite the Castle we find the Federico II tower, precisely in Roma Street, a 24 metres high structure.
Many are the churches to visit in the city, such as the St. Francis of Assisi Church, dating back to the XIVth century, with its bell tower that was a defensive tower, or, still, the St. Marco church, in Baroque style, built in the XVIIth century on the remains of an ancient Synagogue, finally, the St. Chiara church, dating 1600, the St. Giovanni church, the St. Cataldo church and the St. Giovanni Battista bell tower.
Among the various museums to visit, we recommend the Alessi Museum, in the immediate vicinity of the cathedral; and the Regional Archaeological Museum, housed within the Varisano Palace, building dating back to the XVth century.
