New Year's Eve Crotone

The beautiful Crotone landscape becomes fascinating during the less frequented periods by the tourists, such as the Christmas and New Year period.
The panorama that distinguishes this province is really particular: a series of gentle hills that getting closer to the Ionian coast are gradually transformed in white beaches.
In addition, Crotone boasts very old origins: it was founded by the Achei in 709 B.C., and, according to the legend narrated by Ovid, it was Ercole to order the construction of a new city on the Jonio; according to other legends, the city was wanted by the Delphi oracle.
In the past centuries Crotone was a very important city, one of the most important centres of the Magna Graecia, even if its period of maximum splendour corresponds to the VIth century B.C., when Pythagoras established his school.

Today Crotone can base its economy on the industrial sector, particularly on the agricultural industry.
We start our visit of the city from the spectacular Duomo square, where we can admire the Cathedral, built in the IXth century with the materials coming from the Hera Lacinia Temple: this gave to the building architecture a Middle East taste, with strong influences from the Baroque style.
Right next to the Cathedral it is possible to admire the Episcopal Palace, dating back to the XVIth century, while continuing along the Vittorio Emanuele Course we arrive to the Old City Hall headquarter.
Many religious buildings that can be visited in Crotone are: for example, the Immaculate Church, 1554, or the nearby St. Chiara church, with its magnificent convent, built in 1400, but rebuilt in 1700.
Also beautiful is the old Hera Lacinia Sanctuary, dating back to 470 B.C: this is one of the most important Magna Grecia sanctuaries, of which today we can admire only few remains.
Also worth a visit the Pythagoras square, the most important meeting place of the Crotone citiziens precisely in the historical center, on the Knight hill, the square is surrounded by magnificent arcades dating back to the half of 1800.
Who comes to Crotone has to visit the castle, of the Medieval era, and built by the Ruffo family willing.
Finally, a visit to the museums: interesting for the city history is the Archaeological Museum, but very beautiful also is the Civic Museum and the Communal Gallery, focusing particularly on the history of the castle.
