The city has very ancient origins: it is thought that it was founded by the Marruccini people around the year 1000 B.C.
His good fortune was due to the fact that it was crossed by one of the main communication and trade roads with Rome, i.e. the Via Tiburtina Valeria.
Today Chieti economy is based mainly on the industry.
Furthermore, it is the headquarter of a renowned University the Gabriele D’Annunzio University.
The town of Chieti is truly amazing, both historically and artistically: walking through the streets of Chieti we can admire monuments of Roman and medieval origins.
But we start our visit of the city from the cathedral: this beautiful building, situated in the Vittorio Emanuele II square, is dedicated to St. Giustino.
To visit, always in the context of the religious architecture, is the Diocesan Seminary.
But we shall now proceed to the monuments still very ancient: Porta Pescara is the only part remained of the city walls that surrounded it.
Also interesting is the old Marruccino theatre, with its precious stuccoes.
To witness the Imperial age, we find the wonderful thermal baths: these are formed by nine underground rooms and a large tank where was collected the rainwater. Then, it is a must to visit the Civitella and its arena.
However, if you want a witness of the priod when Chieti was still called Teate Marruccinorum, you must visit the beautiful National Archaeological Museum: among the vast collection of antiques, we recall the famous "Capestrano Warrior". We can finish our visit of the city with a pleasant walk in the Municipal Villa garden, a beautiful building dating back to 1800.
