New Year's Eve Carbonia

The Carbonia town has just become a province, and takes its name from the important carbon sink it hosts.
Thanks to the various coal mines the town of Carbonia has grown in the industrial and production sector.
The city is very young: it was officially founded on 18th December 1938, with the intention of providing a forum for the workers working in the Sirai Serbariu mines.
Even if its foundation is so recently, the area around Carbonia has always been inhabited, as witness many archaeological finds.
For example, the Sirai Mount archaeological site was an important Phoenician-Punic centre, while near the Sirri area were rediscovered finds attributable to the Neolithic Sardinian period.
Today the young inhabitants of Carbonia have abandoned the activity of mines, to turn to activities totally different.
In Carbonia there are old monuments to visit, because the city, as already said, was founded in contemporary age, its architecture is that of the twenty years of fascism, namely a rational and ordered architecture.
The city is built according to a hierarchical order: in the city centre there are the town and the Church, and then as long as you reach the suburb, there are the less important buildings, all connected by enormous broad trees that come from the centre.
Logically, the main Carbonia attractions are the mines that, since they have no longer been used, they have become a genuine heritage for the industrial archaeology: for example, the Serbariu mining site was chosen by the UNESCO for the cretaion of the historical and environmental Geo-mineral park of Sardinia. Therefore tours and guided tours are organized, as well as summer events, as the famous Sea and Mines event.
Also, if you are a bird-watching passionate, you absolutely must go to the San Antioco lagoon, where you can observe herons, avocets, pink flamingos, coots and little magpies in their natural habitat.
