New Year's Eve Caltanissetta
Caltanissetta is a little city frequented by the tourists, and for this it could be an unusual and particular destination for your New Year: surely in Caltanissetta you will succeed to immerse yourself and fully enjoy the genuine sicilian hinterland atmosphere.
Its origins are old: originally it was Nissa, a Greek city inhabited by the Syracusans; then the Arabs called her "Qal'at", that means the "Castle", and hence the name Caltanissetta was given.
A Roman colony, conquered by the Saracens and then by the Normans, the Swabians, the Angevins, the Aragonese and the Castilians, the period of maximum cultural and economic splendour was in 1900.
Today the city may base its economy on the tourism, on the agriculture, as well as on the sulphuric deposits that made it earn the title of the "World sulphur Capital”. We start our visit of the city from the cathedral, a beautiful building in neoclassical style built between 1570 and 1622.
Outside the cathedral is decorated with two wonderful bell towers, while inside we can admire wonderful frescoes and many statues.
Other religious building worthy of note is the St. Sebastiano church, situated right next to the cathedral: this church dates back to 1500.
Still, very interesting is the St. Spirit Abbey, consecrated in 1151, a marvellous example of the Romanesque architecture.
We can complete the visit of the churches with the St. Agata church, which includes the Jesuits college in Baroque style, while among the museums we recommend the Diocesan Museum.
Finally, one of the major artistic attractions in Caltanissetta is the Pietrarossa castle, built in 1080, but went almost completely destroyed in 1567 because of a terrible earthquake.
