New Year's Eve Cagliari
The city of Cagliari boasts a truly exceptional position: in fact it is in a beautiful territory in the South Sardinia, characterized by the fabulous Angels Gulf and the Sulcis mountain, that surround the town.
The city has ancient origins, which are dated back to the Neolithic age.
Originally the city was called Karallai, name given by the ancient populations of the area that used to live there.
Many were the dominations that followed, starting from the Phoenicians, then it went under the Carthaginians domain, defeated in 48 B.C. by the Romans. However, one of the most important period was without a doubt the Aragonese one, that enriched the city of architectural works, such as the Castle.
Very important for the prestige of the city and for the Sardinia region in general, is the foundation of the University in the XVIIth century.
Today the main activities of the city are the port and the minino industries.
We start our visit of the city from the Cathedral, in Baroque style, built in the XIIIth century, but many times was restored.
Inside the cathedral we can admire works of great importance, such as, for example, the Black Madonna, a wooden statue dating back to the XIIth century.
However, one of the main monuments is without a doubt the St. Michele castle, decorated with the typical colored Spanish ceramic, called “azulejos”.
The area around the castle is all to visit: we recommend to make a long walk along the small medieval streets, where you can admire the ancient towers in limestone which used to defend the city.
A very important tower that you can admire in Cagliari, is the Elephant tower, built under the domination from Pisa, around 1300: the name comes from a strange relief that you find nearby.
Among the oldest monuments, we recommend a visit around the Roman Amphitheatre, dating to the IInd century B.C. and the suggestive Phoenician-Punic city, namely the Tuvixeddu necropolis.
Finally, we take a look at the museums: we can begin with the National Archaeological Museum, which is in the immediate vicinity of the famous Arsenale square, and which preserves the finds and the ruins of ancient populations from Sardinia.
Very particular is the S. Cardu Siamese Art Museum, where we can admire rare objects and prestigious of crafts from Thailand.
To visit, finally, the National Gallery and the Anatomical Waxes Gallery.
