New Year's Eve Bergamo
During the Christmas and New Year holdays, Bergamo get filled with characteristic flea markets and festivals very suggestive.
Bergamo is the fourth city of the Lombardia region for greatness and it can be distinguished between the Alta (high) Bergamo and the Bassa (low) Bergamo: the Alta part of the city is the historical centre, while the Bassa part of the city is the more modern area.
Furthermore, Bergamo has a great variety of uncontaminated landscapes, as it is bounded by a part from the Alps, on the other from the plain and it is washed by two rivers, the Adda and the Oglio.
In the immediate vicinity, you can also visit the beautiful lake Sebino.
The climate is not one of the best, as the winter is cold, rainy and foggy and the summer is hot and humid; a positive climate point is the snow that never fails to appear during the winter season.
There are many historical festivals throughout the year in Bergamo: for example, in August you can observe the "historical medieval commemoration", or, in the same month, the "Festival of the blueberry".
But let's start our visit in Bergamo Alta: the place of greatest interest in this area is the Vecchia square, the real symbol of the city, dating back even to the 1300s.
In this wonderful square you can admire the Palazzo della Ragione, symbol of the Comunal age; and, still, Torre Civica, known as "the bell": always in the Vecchia square we find the ancient Domus Suardorum (XIV-XV), where today we find the University of Bergamo.
In the northern part of the square we can admire a wonderful Palace of the seventeenth-century, entirely in white marble: once upon a time it was the Town Hall, within the building today there is the city Library.
Finally, we need to mention the beautiful fountain that adorns the square, a gift of the Podestà of the Veneto region Alvise Contarini.
Then, paasing by the so-called palace Della Ragione, we arrive to the small square of the cathedral (Duomo).
However, one of the most important monuments of the city is the S. Maria Maggiore basilica, built in the XII century: at this Church have worked many artists, from all over Italy and not only.
It is also part of the church the Col leoni church, the Bartolomeo Col leoni mausloeum.
Always in the small square of the cathedral there is the Baptistery.
But te walk can continue along the walls of the Alta part of the city, built during the roman period and then restructured, rebuilt and recast in the Middle Age.
Many areas to visit also out of the city are, for example, it is mandatory a visit to the Pontida abbey, not far from the city.
Then you cannnot not visit the Val Brembana, with its beautiful historical villages, such as the San Pellegrino town: here you can also relax in the beautiful thermal baths.
Finally, if the weather and the season permit it, you can make a pleasant excursion in the green of Regional Park of Bergamo.
Another important stage is, without a doubt, to stop in one of the most typical restaurants, where you can enjoy the traditional cuisine of this area.
Many restaurant to recommend, but perhaps the most popular is the Trattoria Antica della Brianza, where you can enjoy really special receipes.
For those who are in search of a funny night, there are too many clubs worthy of a visit.
Among these, we advise, for example, the Quien Sabe, where you can listen to very good live music, or go to the Fluid, a famous disco in Bergamo, or the Keller, a club able to satisfy every need!
