New Year's Eve Benevento

If you are in the Campania region in the Christmas and New Year period and you want a bit of snow, then you can go to the small town of Benevento, in the middle of the Campania Appennines.
It is precisely the Appennines which affect the climate, that is cold in winter and sultry during the summer.
Despite this, the agricultural activity of this area is very developed, and this is the main source of livelihood.
The town boasts great historical treasures, thanks to its very ancient origins, which date back even to the Samnites period.
The Romans changed, in 268 B.C., the name from Maleventum to Beneventum. The wonderful buildings created in the Medieval era and under the Goths, Byzantines, the Longobards and finally the Pontifical dominion, went in part destroyed by the earthquake in 1688.
Benevento is also known as the city of the witches, nickname that dates back to the period of the Longobards domain who, by introducing bizarre customs they scared and led to superstition the Christian population of the zone.
We start our visit of the city from the cathedral, built in the XIIth century, with its imposing bell tower, built in 1280 circa.
Among the museums, very interesting is the Diocesan Museum, as well as the Capitular Library, which preserves ancient Medieval codes and parchments.
Still, for who is curious to discover the Samnites people, we can visit the Sannio Museum, situated alongside the beautiful St. Sofia church, with Longobard origins.
The museum, created in 1873, is divided into different sections, with witnesses of various peoples that have occupied along the centuries this territory, and it is hosted inside the Rectors Fortress, wanted by Pope John XXII in 1321.
To visit also the the Roman Theatre ruins, built by the Emperor Adriano, and the Trajan arch.
Finally, we can visit the Popes Villa, and then go for a walk slightly outside the city, along the Leproso and the Valentino bridges.
