New Year's Eve Bari
For who is in search for a bustling New Year’s Eve in a square, Bari is certainly the most suitable city!
Situated in a beautiful flat area just on the coast, in the shadow of the Murge plateau, Bari boasts a Mediterranean climate, with very mild winters.
The city has very ancient origins: in fact, belonging to the Bronze age, it was then conquered by the Romans and contented among the Byzantines, the Longobards and the Saraceni, then it went under the Normans domination.
Although the city had grown economically thanks to the construction of the Appia Traiana Road, its maximum splendor period was during the Norman domination. Bari is formedby the Old Suburb (or Old Bari), characterised by small streets and old streets, and by the New Suburb, outside the Medieval walls: this latter was buit from 1813, by the will of the King of the Kingdom of Naples, Gioacchino Murat.
This time we start our tour of the city by the Norman Svevo Castle, an important construction that once upon a time was facing the sea, characterized by strong bastions and the typical ditch.
Inside it, we can admire the Provincial Gipsoteca, where there are stored the important sculptures casts.
However, all the old city, namely the zone from the DeTullio Course, the Emperor Augustus waterfront and the Vittorio Emanuele II Course, worth a visit.
Here we find the beautiful cathedral, built in the XIIth and XIIIth century, it is one of the highest examples of the Romanesque architecture in Apulia.
Other good example of the Romanesque style is the St. Nicola basilica, always in the Old city, in which are kept the St. Nicholas relics.
To visit also are the many museums in Bari, as for example the Provincial Art Gallery, situated within the Province Palace, and the Archaeological Museum, with relics of the populations that lived in Apulia and Salento.
Very interesting is the New city, which holds the most recent monuments, such as the Levante Fair, a structure built around 1930, in oriental style.
Another strong piece in this area is the St. Nicola Stadium, designed by Renzo Piano in occasion of the World Soccer Championship in Italy in 1990.
